How to Clean Your Hearing Aids
How to clean your hearing aids
Cleaning your hearing aids daily is optimal for the life of your aids. We recommend you use the wipes that we provided at our office. Do not use anti-bacterial wipes made for surfaces, the chemicals are too harsh. You should be cleaning ear wax from the dome or earmold that is inserted into your ear canal every day. It is also important to clean your ears before putting on your hearing aids. Using a tissue or cotton swab to clean the opening is recommended. Little particles of wax will hinder sound quality and eventually stop the aid from working.
This video demonstrates how to clean the exterior of the hearing aid, remove and clean the dome and how to replace the wax filter located under the dome. It is recommended to change the hearing aid wax filter every 2 months or as needed.
At Everybody Hears, we do a more thorough cleaning during the clean and check appointment at our office, typically every 4 months.
How to replace the wax filter
Sometimes wax can work its way back behind the dome and clog the wax filter. This will cause the aid to stop working. We replace this as part of your regular clean and check visits but you may find yourself needing to replace it if the aid stops working and you are not able to come to our office. First remove the dome by squeezing it between two fingers and pulling it off. You may get better grip using a tissue or cloth. You will see the white filter in the tip of the receiver. Use the empty side of the filter stick to remove the dirty filter then flip the stick around and insert a clean filter. Replace the dome taking care to check that it is securely fastened. Throw out the used filter stick.
